If the group of wrestlers is in the younger groups, and depending on the area where they wrestle, the timeframe can extend to 5-minutes without a resting period or 1-minute. The children in the lower grades, playing at the US AW matches will often receive a break during a short round. Usually the rounds last a couple of minutes with a thirty-second resting time in between. Anytime the group is out higher than the seventh-eighth grade levels another minute is added to the rounds. Junior wrestlers often receive a break, between a three minute round. The more experienced wrestlers can match a couple of minutes, yet they will receive a longer break. At the AAU battles the timeframe changes again, yet variation are adjusted accordingly to the groups.
During the junior and other group rounds, before the player proceeds to the rings the referee will check for issues that may or may not disqualify the wrestler. The referee will search for infections, dampness, etc before asking the wrestlers to deliver a handshake to both the wrestler and referee. The referee will then sound off the whistle, alerting the battlers that the round has begun.
