Cymbalta is a medicine used mainly in the treatment of major depression. However, it has been reported that it also has effect when treating anxiety. An important fact that must be remembered by everybody is that Cymbalta has not been approved for pediatric patients. This is due to the fact that, according to some studies that have been performed by scientists, antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal tendencies in children and adolescents. The subject of the study was represented by children and adolescents that suffered from major depressive disorder. Close monitoring is required as the patients may manifest sudden changes in the behavior.

Interactions of Cymbalta with Other Drugs

Cymbalta for anxiety may interact with many other drugs. First of all, it is very important not to take Cymbalta and monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) simultaneously. The reaction which will result from this combination is fatal in most of the cases. If a treatment based on monoamine oxidase inhibitors has been followed, then people are advised to start the Cymbalta treatment two weeks after finishing the first one. One the other hand, if a Cymbalta treatment has been followed the treatment based on monoamine oxidase inhibitors may only start at least 5 days after finishing the first one.

Other medication with which Cymbalta may interact are cimetidine, linezolid, lithium, St. John's wort, tramadol, tryptophan, almotriptan, sumatriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan and zolmitriptan, as well as other other antidepressants such as amitriptyline, amoxapine, clomipramine, desipramine, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, imipramine, nortriphyline, paroxetine, protriptyline, setraline, trimipramine or venlafaxine. If any of these drugs is taken, a doctor or a health care specialist must be informed before starting the treatment based on Cymbalta for anxiety. If the doctor considers that the medications can be taken concomitantly, then the dosage must be adjusted so that adverse reactions are prevented.

Cymbalta for anxiety is also able to interact with alcohol, so drinking alcoholic drinks during the treatment is strictly prohibited. The liver becomes more vulnerable when alcohol is consumed. Sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, painkillers, and medication for seizures is also to be avoided. Sleepiness is already a side-effect of Cymbalta. These pills increase even more that effect. Cymbalta is known to produce adverse reactions that alter thinking and reflexes. Because of this, people who follow a treatment based on this medication are advised not to drive. Also, activities that require alertness must be performed with great care, in order to avoid any possible accidents.
