Hyzaar medication is a blended medication used for the treatment of high blood pressure. One part, Losartan, Is part of a new class of blood pressure medications that prevent the hormone angiotensin II from constricting the blood vessels. This allows blood to flow more freely and keeping the blood pressure under control. The other ingredient, hydrochlorothiazide, is a diuretic that increases the elimination of urine, removing fluid from the body and as a result, lowering blood pressure.

How should you take Hyzaar?

Hyzaar can be taken with or without food. Take Hyzaar exactly as your doctor has directed. Make efforts to take it at the same time every day so that it is easier to remember. If you miss a dose, take the forgotten dose right away. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the one dose that you missed and go back to your regular schedule.

What side effects may occur?

Side effects should not be expected. Yet, if any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor is able to determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Hyzaar.

Possible Side effects
* Dizziness
* upper respiratory infection
* reaction to losartan, hydrochlorothiazide, or sulfa drugs
* watch your kidney function carefully
* low blood pressure
* you may feel light-headed or faint

Cautions
1. If you have liver or kidney disease, gout, lupus erythematosus or todiabetes, use with caution. This drug may bring out "hidden" diabetes.
2. If you are currently taking insulin or oral diabetes drugs, your medication may have to be changed.
3. If you have bronchial asthma or a history of allergies, you may be at greater risk for an allergic reaction to Hyzaar medication.
4. Excessive sweating, severe diarrhea or vomiting could reduce your body fluids and cause your blood pressure to drop to unsafe levels.
5. Be careful when exerting yourself and in hot weather.
6. Call your doctor if your mouth feels dry, you are weak or tired or sluggish, you feel unusually thirsty, you are restless or confused, you ache all over your body, your heart starts beating faster, or you feel you are nauseated. Rare and serious allergic reactions to Hyzaar have been reported. If you start to develop swelling of the face, lips, or throat, you should call your doctor immediately. Serious swelling might well obstruct your breathing.

Possible food and drug interactions with Hyzaar

Hyzaar has a tendency to increase the effects of alcohol. So, avoid alcohol while taking Hyzaar.
If Hyzaar medication is taken with some particular drugs, the effects of those drugs could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check in often with your doctor before taking Hyzaar with the following:
* Barbiturates such as phenobarbital and Seconal
* Cholestyramine (Questran)
* Narcotic painkillers such as Demerol, Tylenol with Codeine, and Percocet
* Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Aleve, Anaprox, and Motrin
* Other blood pressure-lowering drugs such as Procardia XL and Tenormin
* Oral diabetes drugs such as Diabinese, DiaBeta, and Glucotrol
* Potassium supplements such as Slow-K
* Salt substitutes containing potassium
* Sulfaphenazole
* Troleandomycin
* Colestipol (Colestid)
* Corticosteroids (Prednisone)
* Diuretics that leave potassium in the body, such as Aldactone, triamterene, and amiloride
Indomethacin (Indocin)
* Insulin
* Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
* Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid)

Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

If used in the second or third trimester of pregnancy, Hyzaar my cause injury or death to the unborn child. Stop taking Hyzaar immediately as soon as you know you are pregnant. If you already are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, tell your doctor right away. Hyzaar medication does appear in breast milk and can affect the nursing child. If Hyzaar is critical to your health, your doctor will likely advise you to stop breastfeeding while you are taking Hyzaar.

Recommended dosage

ADULTS
Hyzaar medication is available in two strengths, 50/12.5 (50 milligrams of losartan and 12.5 milligrams of hydrochlorothiazide) and 100/25 if The usual starting dose is one 50/12.5 tablet per day.
If your blood pressure does not respond to this dose, after about 3 weeks the doctor may increase the dose to two 50/12.5 tablets once daily, or one 100/25 tablet a day.

CHILDREN
The safety and effectiveness of Hyzaar in children has not been studied.

Overdosage
Medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. Information concerning Hyzaar medication overdosage is not well-known. However, extremely low blood pressure and abnormally rapid or slow heartbeat may be signs of an overdose. Other signs include dryness and thirst, overall weakness, tiredness, restlessness, confusion, muscle pains, nausea, and vomiting. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
