If you are suffering from diabetes, controlling your blood sugar levels is crucial. For diabetics, their blood sugar levels can spike up to dangerous levels, hence insulin therapy, diet, and exercise are very important. Insulin leveling drugs are now available in the market to help people control their blood sugar spikes. One such drug is known as Glucotrol XL.
Basic facts
Glucotrol XL, or more popularly known as Glipzide, is a pill that helps lower blood sugar levels for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics. With the help of diet and exercise, Glucotrol XL will help curb the dangers brought by this disease.
Glucotrol XL belongs to the sulfonylurea class. That is, it is an oral hypoglycemic agent taken to lower the level of blood glucose. Sulfonylurea increases the secretion of insulin by the pancreas.
Battling diabetes
According to the American Diabetes Association, about 0.8 million children and adults in the United States alone (7% of the US population) are suffering from diabetes. Sadly, only an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed; about 6.2 million people are still unaware that they have the disease.
One of the important risk factors in diabetes is the blood sugar. Your blood sugar level is the amount of glucose (or sugar) in the blood. Blood sugar levels usually start low during the day and will increase after every meal.
For diabetics, blood sugar level moves outside normal boundaries. If left untreated, uncontrollable blood sugar levels may lead to kidney, liver, and other internal complications. Taking medications is one way to control blood sugar spikes.
Ingredients
Glucotrol XL contains chemicals including polyethylene oxide, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, sodium chloride, red ferric oxide, cellulose acetate, polyethylene glycol, Opadry® blue, Opadry® white, and black ink.
It comes in doses of 2.5mg, 5mg, or 10mg, depending on the needs of the patient as advised by his doctor. The recommended intake of Glipzide is once a day and is only for oral use.
Side effects
Although Glipzide is viewed to be effective in lowering blood sugar levels, it does have side effects. Popular side effects that come with ingesting Glipzide include:
v Nausea
v Vomiting
v Loss of appetite
v Diarrhea
v Constipation
v Upset stomach
v Weight gain
These effects are normal but should disappear after a few days of taking the drug. However, if these effects become persistent, it may be high time to consult your doctor.
Take note, also, that this drug should not be taken on an empty stomach. Also, it is normal to find an empty tablet shell in your stool.
