Generic flomax is used in treating symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate, a condition clinically called as benign prostatic hyperplasia. The prostate is about the size of a walnut and it surrounds the urethra (the duct responsible for draining the bladder). If the prostate gland becomes enlarged, it can constrict the urethra, partially or completely, interfering with proper urine flow. This constriction then causes difficulties in trying to urinate, weakened urine flow, and a general need to urinate more frequently. The generic flomax functions not to reduce the size of the enlarged prostate but rather, it relaxes the surrounding muscles, freeing up urine flow, and decreasing associated urinary symptoms.

Consult your doctor
Before taking this medication, please do consult your doctor first if you are taking any of the following medications:
l cimetidine

This would include even regular vitamin supplements and herbal products. Consequently, while under flomax use, do not use any new medication (prescription or over-the-counter) without consulting your doctor first.
Drug reactions
Two adverse drug reactions for generic flomax have been documented:
l Immunologic: It has sulfa moiety, causing it to have typical reactions with sulfa drugs
l Opthalmologic: Patients who have been taking generic flomax are susceptible to a particular complication known to be floppy iris syndrome during cataract surgeries. The adverse outcomes of a surgery are immensely reduced if the surgeon has been properly briefed about the patient's medical history with flomax. With the proper knowledge, alternative techniques might be used.http://www.aclepsa.com/flomax.shtml?id=3733
