How should I take this medication?

Who should NOT take this medication?
This medication should not be taken by anyone who:
* is taking astemizole, terfenadine, or cisapride
* is allergic to clarithromycin, erythromycin, or other macrolide antibacterial agents
* has an infection caused by microorganisms that are resistant to erythromycin

What side effects are possible with this medication?
The most frequent side effect with erythromycin is abdominal cramping and discomfort.
Less frequent reactions are:
* hives
* mild rashes
* serious allergic reactions
* nausea
* vomiting
* diarrhea

Rarely, liver dysfunction (e.g., jaundice) has been reported. Call your doctor if you develop diarrhea while on erythromycin. This would include finding blood in the stools.

Allergy: Erythromycin should be taken with caution by anyone who has had any form of allergy to drugs. If you experience an allergic reaction to erythromycin, stop taking it.
Overgrowth of organisms: Repeated use of erythromycin may result in an proliferation of bacteria or fungi and organisms that aren't killed by the drug, causing problems such as yeast infections. If this medication is overused antibiotic resistant strains of organisms can grow.
Liver: Since erythromycin is principally excreted by the liver, caution needs to be exercised when this drug is taken by anyone with reduced liver function. There have been signs of liver problems occurring in a percentage of people receiving erythromycin drugs and especially erythromycin estolate in particular. Anyone experiencing yellowing of the pigments of their eyes or skin should see their doctor to be checked for jaundice.
Pregnancy: The safety of erythromycin for use during pregnancy has not been established. It crosses the placental barrier but has not been clinically tested for moral reasons.
Breast-feeding: The safety of erythromycin for use during breast-feeding has not been established. It is excreted in breast milk and may affect the infant but again no studies have been done on this.
Children: The safety of erythromycin for use by newborns has not been established because testing would involve large-scale exposure.

Taking erythromycin and high doses of theophylline at the same time may be associated with increased blood theophylline levels and possible overdose of theophylline. If you are taking theophylline, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:
* stop taking one of the medications,
* change one of the medications to another,
* change how you are taking one or both of the medications, or
* leave everything as is.
